My sister is having me take care of seven year old son. It is now going on two months since I have had him, how long before its' condsider child abandomnet in the state of Indiana.

Child abandonment is a criminal offense that refers to leaving a child without adult supervision.

Did your sister give you any legal right to take care of her son? Do you have a Power of Attorney or guardianship? What were the circumstances behind her leaving him with you? What is it you really want? Do you want to adopt the child or what?

The term can be thrown out in civil court if the child's father is trying to get custody, since the parent is not with the child, but it is not a criminal to have someone else care for the child.

So do you have contact with the parent, or did they leave the child and disappear ? Are they in contact with the child, ( phone or computer ?) are they sending money?
