Conspiring to commit a crime is a crime.
Committing the crime is a crime.
You most assuredly can be charged with both.
JMO I am not an attorney but I suggest you hire one.

Claims he or she didn't do anything but tag along/wait outside etc while others committed the crime? Pay a lawyer to ask for a separate trial. Don't count on it though, or getting that to work.

What? The question is can the person be charged. The answer is - yes.

First just tagging along and waiting outside ( knowing they were doing the crime) is part of the crime and he is guilty of the theft. In most states, he is as guilty as the people who went inside.
In some states, he would have had to enter for it to be burglary but most merely being a part ( like a look out) or (driver of the car) is guilty of the same crime.
So if his only defense is he was waiting outside, he needs to see about turning evidence on the others and making a plea deal
