I have a nephew that was convicted of felony at 10, served full term, has been out of prison for 7 years since serving full sentence, and can't get a job he has a felony conviction. He has worked several jobs with good references and has good references now, but the conviction stands in his way. People are not obligated to hire your nephew even if felonies pass the statute of limitation.

That's why it's important not to have a criminal record, but that's another story.

The only thing is to keep searching for jobs and hopefully someone will give him a break. But they are free to hire whoever they want. Even if he got rejected, it doesn't mean he got rejected because of his criminal record, it could be because they found a better candidate.

Nope. A criminal record lasts FOREVER. But, there's work. It'll be harder for him to find a job than others, so he has to work a little harder looking for it.

He's better off going straight to the person DOING the hiring, rather than have to fill out applications and waiting by the phone. If you told them you're a felon, no matter how GOOD YOU are at what you do, the phone will NEVER ring.

If he's able to visit with the MAN, then if he can convince the MAN that he NEEDS him, then his record will NOT be so important. Your nephew shouldn't confuse his prospective employer as a social agency. Nobody wants to hire a felon just to give him a chance... Nope, they don't.

Of course today even with a college degree and no record, you may have to apply to 100 places to get 10 interviews and still maybe no job offer.

I applied for a job in Michigan where I have a felony that's over 7 years old. They said that they hire felons but 7 years from my release date. Its been 4 1/2 years since I was released. My question is on the background check will it show my release date or even my felony? I was told that the system staffing agencys use only go back 7 years. Is this true?

Background checks are NOT all the same. Burger King wouldn't want to know as much about your past as say, Bank of America would. However, even a comprehensive one most likely WOULDN'T include your release date. It MIGHT show the conviction, when it happened, and in what state. Those are public records. I doubt whether it will show the sentence you received, and your release date is a prison record that ISN'T public.

Having said that, it appears this company has some method of determining that date, unless they're totally full of crap. I'd be interested in seeing how this works out.

I applid to a staffing company that is filling up the old ford plant. They told me it may take a month to complete this or longer. I am going to go through with the entire process. I will let you know what happens. Thank you for your answers.
