Hi,
I am looking to power a detached workshop. I am planning on getting a second service installed and placing running a direct burial cable from the service to a 200 a breaker in the workshop. The run length will be 100-150 feet. Suggestions on wire type / size are appreciated.
Thanks
Dan

If you are planning on running a second service, you really need to have this conversation with the local power company.
A 200 Amp service would require a #4/0 AL cable should be fine, as long as you stay at 100 ft.
Normally the Poco will supply the cable from the transformer to the meter. However there are occasions where this is not true.
Are you sure that you don't want to run a second panel off you main panel? 200 Amps is a lot of power for a workshop.
Have done or had a licensed electrician do a load calculation for this building?

I have talked about to the power company about adding the second service, but I think that will only run to the same location at the corner of the house where the existing service is for the house. I need the extra service / meter to separate the workshop usage from the power usage in the house. As for the 200 a, it is over kill but I want to ensure that I have the ability to pull that much power.
