We paid a Sears repairman to come out when we had a flashing "Clean" light on our dishwasher, A Kenmore Ultra Wash 665.1603 or 1703, and he gave us the diagnostic code (buttons to push on the operating panel) and we have used it again after that, but I cannot find the order of the buttons to push now. Does anyone know which ones to select?

I have a 1701, and the sequence is heated dry-normal wash-heated dry-normal wash; but I understand for the 1703 the buttons are heated wash-heated dry instead. Ooh, and I see there are some similar answers below that probably have the same information.

My Sears washer is model 665.17029400 and reset is as follows-Press normal wash and heated dry one after the other about 5 times. All lights on panel will light.Wait until all lights go out and it resets itself. It will go into a mode on it's own. Then press cancel and set your options as you normally would and press start. This worked for me after not having washer for 3 months.Sears customer service told me to turn off breaker for 5 minutes and it would reset itself-NOT TRUE! Depend on sites like this for practical imfo.Sears does not want you to know these things as it would eliminate expensive and unessary service calls.

P.S. I see some people using 1700 numbers which are typically stock numbers which can change from time to time. The model numbers are as I have listed above. This may help you in the future when searching for answers to your questions. Ciao!

curtisst and community - thanks for the code to reset the cleaning light. That worked for me. I had gone through everything in the user's guide and looking for "suds." I should have come to this site first.

I love this site!!
Our Kenmore 665.1603 started acting up, not cleaning the dishes well, cutting off mid cycle, and then finally we got the "green" clean flashing light. The machine would not turn on, total bummer! I called service and all they could tell me was that an extended warranty cost over $200.00 for a year, or a service call would cost $65.00 plus parts and labor. We were not pleased.

I checked this site, saw the fix and the machine is working brilliantly.

We pushed the NORMAL WASH then HEATED DRY buttons one after the other until all the lights on the board lit up (3X's). The dishwasher went into a cycle; we canceled it, and then started our cycle as normal and it works fine.

I have to say, I think it is total crap that the "phone tech" could not tell me this, or that this VERY simple fix is not in the owners’ manual.

I'm done with Sears.

On my Kenmore Elite with hidden buttons, I don't know the model number, it was:

Heated Dry, Hi Temp Wash, Heated Dry, Hi Temp Wash, close the door, Start, open the door, Cancel 2x.

That is odd, Spell Check in this forum doesn't know about the word "Kenmore" or about "Maytag".

Hey, owners of Kenmore Elite Ultra Wash Dishwashers Models 665.1726* -- READ the suggestions here about dealing with the flashing green "clean" light indicating a malfunction. I had emptied the dishwasher two days ago and wondered why some of the top items weren't dry -- but proceeded to start reloading without much thought of it until tonight when it was time to run it! Naturally, I discovered that the "clean" green light flashing meant a malfunction and I was resigned to washing things manually until I could contact Sears next week. First, I checked the dishwasher itself and retrieved a knife and a plastic clamp from the bottom which had both worked themselves under the heat coil. Then I turned the circuit breaker off and on (but not long enough I guess,) but it still wouldn't start.
Finally headed to my computer and lo and behold, the suggestions on this website about pushing the "hi temp wash" and "heated dry" buttons worked! All the lights came on, the system reset itself -- and I'm now washing a load of very dirty dishes again~!
Thanks, all, for sharing your experiences that work! I'm so happy! :)

This is so great--Last year I had to have a $75.00 service call for 'blinking clean /won't start' and all he did was stand between me and the machine, an Ultra 4, and hit buttons. He wouldn't tell me, and when I tried to see, he covered up all the buttons. Today it did the same thing so I started looking for more info on line. Found this and can't thank you all enough not giving Kenmore another service call and for saving me the $75.
For mine the heated dry -normal wash repeated sequence caused all the lights to light up--then I closed the door, hit cancel, then start and it automatically started on normal wash, heated dry. I opened the door, pushed cancel, closed door, pushed smart wash, hi temp wash,** turned off heated dry and hit start. It is fine again.

Thanks so much to everyone for sharing and 'sucks' to kenmore for not making this info available--by phone, on line, in the manual--anywhere. I specifically asked the telephone service person for the reset sequence and was told I could only get it with a service call. It is such a scam to get customers to buy maintenance contracts or pay $75. For a 5 minute 'service' call. That man earned his money with the abuse I gave him.
Dee

** I use hi temp wash because I keep the water heater just over 100 degrees.

What makes things even more disgusting is that I am a licensed plumber in my state (union so I do new construction not service--) and they still refused to give me the reset code because I am not a registered Sears repair person. I even offered to fax my license card. Their reason was that I could cause further damage to MY machine. Whatever. Just their way to **** us.

FYI, I have a 665.1691, which does not have the "heated dry" button mentioned in the posts above. However, the pattern of "Hi Temp Scrub - Air Dry- Hi Temp Scrub - Air Dry" worked. It lit up all of the LEDs and when I pressed "Start" it went into a 10-count diagnostic sequence with a 3 minute cycle. This cured my "Sanitized" LED flashing problem.
Thank you to this forum, which helped me figure out the reset code for my model!

Hi, I'm new to the forums here.

I noticed the only two model series mentioned here are the 1600 series and the 1700 series. My model number is 665.13712k601.

Same problem as the rest of you... blinking lights, normal wash, cancel/drain; back and fourth. I've tried the "normal wash, heated dry" x3 sequence, and every other 2 button x,y,x,y,x,y sequence possible. Still won't go into the diagnostic sequence.

Any ideas?

Great site - now bookmarked!

Thanks for the info people. The normal wash - heated dry repeated sequence worked for me.

I had toothpicks and glass bits blocking the pump inlets. We really have to rinse more often.

Thank you, thank you! We have been looking at dishwashers - because I really do want to replace this one, but not NOW! It's Christmas! So, we had the blinking green light and could not figure out what to do except replace it. Decided to go to the internet and do some serious searching, didn't take long to find this site and she is in there running through a cycle as I type! Thank you for sharing, Merry Christmas to all! (Hopefully nobody HAS to get an appliance under the tree this year, especailly at this house)!

used the heated dry- normal wash x3 sequence, all lights went on, restarted cycle I cancelled and the washer works fine. From what I have read elsewhere, the interrupt *may* have something to do with a thermostat circuit cutting out if the entry hot water is too high ( more than 145F) - it seems like a buggy safety feature i.e. the circuit board thinks that the water heater is overheating. The makers have apparently made changes to the control board to fix this bug but it costs serious $$$ to get a repairman in and buy the new board.

I prefer to use the reset code and turn down my heater a bit!

Note that this happened on Xmas day and I called Sears and they of course set up a service visit hohohohoho...

Had the heating coil in our dishwasher split in half today. Got a new one and installed it and discovered the green flashing light wouldn't stop and I couldn't run the machine. So I called the repair number to have a technician come out (which I was told wouldn't happen for 2 weeks).

After a bit of searching, I found this site and thread and it's solved my issue and saved me some money. Thank you to all who provided help!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I was totally bummed because I thought I needed a new dishwasher. It didn't make sense that the clean light would stay on even with the door open. I tried resetting with the circuit breaker also. No luck. I'm not sure which model I have because I've searched and searched for the papers to no avail. I purchased it in 2005. I am SO happy I don't have to get a new disherwasher! I did dry, clean, dry, clean, dry clean until all lights lite up and lo and behold it worked. THANKS SO MUCH!!

Praise the Lord for Bingston. I first called Sears to have set up an appontment for them to come out and they offered me two options. $129 to cover all labor, no matter how long it took, or $204 and it would cover parts and labor. I told them it sounded like a ripoff, since what if it only needed a reset, or only took him 5 minutes to find the problem and a $10 part. I told them it sounded like Sears was trying to rip people off. For the $200 I could go out and buy a now Kenmore dishwasher. I read Bingston's post and that took care of it, again thank you and please keep this site up and running.

You people here rock. My Kenmore Dishwasher wasn't cleaning the dishes anymore. I looked it up online and found out the problem was the grinding cleaning arms were clogged with all kinds of gross things. I cleaned it out and also learned about Dishwasher Magic, which I found at ace hardware, no one else had it to get rid of the hard water and dishwasher detergent residues which were winding up on my dishes.

Unfortunately then the Dishwasher now wouldn't turn on. The Pots and Pans Light was stuck on. I found you here and did the normal wash, heated dry buttons I think 3 or 4 times, all the lights started flashing then the machine turned on. I pushed cancel twice and it turned off . Then, I reset it as I normally would and.. It's working great.
I am using the Dishwasher Magic and hopefully it will handle my problem with the residue.

I have to thank you all, specifically the comments from Lillys_Daddy posting for the tip on resolving this issue. I was going crazy with this problem. I refused to call Sears to get ripped off!! We have service contract on this fairly new house for all the appliances and we have had the circuit board replaced already, by a Technician from a third party Service Contract Company, but in a 24 hours the darn dishwasher went crazy again with that green light. We had the technician out again, and this time he went through some sequence to get the dishwasher back on course. We have been told the power surges in Florida screw up the appliances. But he would not tell me what that sequence of button pushing was! He also told me the company had many problems with this model of dishwasher from Sears. This kind of makes you wonder about the quality Sears is proclaiming they put out. I am so through with that nonsense. I mean really your only costing yourself money cause as far as I am concerned I paid a years service contract and I would have you out here as many times as required.

Is there a class action law suit against Sears for putting out LEMONS like this one?

curtisssss you are the MANNNN , worked perfectly. My drain was clogged, so after I cleaned it out the flashing green light is as I presume a diagnositic code. Flashes 6x then 1x (which probably means clogged or no drain) after I cleaned it out, I reset the computer by pushing normal/heated dry 2 or 3x and all lights lit up. After a few minutes I pushed cancel and everything worked. Thanks fella's

Unfortunately, although the info here allowed me to do the reset, it appears it does indicate an underlying defect. When I was able to run the washer again, it didn't work properly. So the flashing clean light does in fact seem to have a function - keeping you from using the machine when it's broken.

You guys rock!

I took down the model and serial number and started to look for the Sears number. I was worried this would cost a couple hundred dollars since the warrantee had expired three years ago. Then I thought to check the web - this might be an easy fix. This was the first Google came up with. It worked first time!

Yes - the internet is a wonderful tool!

Thank you so much for this information! I know I didn't actually do anything besides follow your instructions, however, I must admit I feel pretty good not having to call a technician out to my house! Plus, my husband says he now owes me a foot massage. :)

I tried the heated dry-normal wash : heated dry-normal wash sequence and got all of the buttons to come on and a cycle to start, however, when I canceled the cycle that automatically started the green clean button was still flashing and I couldn't start a new wash cycle. After several times of this happening I finally just let the cycle that started automatically run. After a few minutes it ended, the clean button was not flashing and I was able to start a new cycle. I thought I would share just in case someone else had this unique problem.

Anyway, thank you again, so very much!

I like your post very helpful the washer is back in service, thank you very much. I called sears and asked for a service man to come out and repair my dishwasher and they quoted me 150 just to have the dishwasher diagnosed or I could pay 250 for a service plan that would cover all repairs and coverage for 1 year. I cancelled to service order. I am so glad I took the time and did some research on my own, with your help everything has worked out and my wife is happy again.

You should have gotten a sheet with the dishwasher that says part no. 8535451
And says "FOR SERVICE TECHNICIAN'S USE ONLY". There is a section: SERVICE DIAGNOSTICS CYCLE NOTES.
NOTE 1. To start the Service Diagnostics Cycle, press the following keys, in order, in less than 6 seconds:
Heated Dry, Normal, Heated Dry, Normal
This will initiate a cycle which lasts about 30 minutes.
This same sheet shows what is being checked if you desire to watch it go through the whole sequence.

Having forums like this is one of the best uses of Internet! Like many others, I thank you all for sharing the info about fixing the issue with a blinking "clean" light on a Kenmore dishwasher.

My model is 665.1389/ 665.1321 and the procedure worked brilliantly. HERE ARE THE STEPS:
1. Hit 'normal wash'-'heated dry' sequence repeatedly (3 times in my case) until all the lights light up.
2. Close the door and, after the dishwasher re-sets itself, it will automatically start a normal wash-heated dry cycle.

As simple as this (shame on Kenmore for not including this info in their troubleshooting section in the manual!)!

If I could reach through the internet and give you a big kiss I would Curtisst! My dishwasher is off and running. After blinking "clean" at me for 2 hours of frustration, the "normal wash" and "heated dry" alternating buttons lit the entire panel as you predicted, momentarily went out, and started up with normal wash. Being the mother of all teenage boys with an over loaded washer crammed boy style, I was dreading the hand cleaning coming up. Now I am having a glass of wine! Muah

Thank you for everyone's input.

My Kenmore Elite Dishwasher model 16263's reset sequence is "heated dry" followed by "normal wash" repeated about 3 times and then all lights came on, then the unit went through a reset procedure. Then I started a normal wash but it wouldn't stop washing. So I turned off circuit breaker for 2 minutes and when I restored power, the dishwasher was completely back to normal! This saved me $350 in repair costs (which is what it cost me the last time it happened). Thank you to this awesome site!

Same thing... last wash didn't dry well, and green light continued flashing. I followed
"Lillys_Dad" suggestion and now it's running (hope it's cleaning! ). Not more than a month ago, Sears repairs was here to fix our Kenmore refrig that was bought and installed the same time (about 4 years ago). I guess all their appliances crap out after the same amount of time. It cost us $300ish to fix the refrig, and I couldn't afford to have them back for the dishwasher -- thanks all, especially Lillys Dad!

I just used the sequence high temp wash-air dry-high temp wash-air dry and all the lights came on, then the lights sort of cycled through all the "cycles" then it went into a very short normal wash. Then all lights went out. No more blinking!

BTW... make sure door is shut and latched securely or it will not reset completely.

I'm not sure which model ours is, but it was "Hi-temp" - "Air Dry" and went back and forth a couple times. --- Then I had to close the door, start, and cancel 2x.

Thanks for the help!! :)

So thankful for the help! :) And now we will enjoy clean dishes again:) OH this advise works also on model #655.1312 as well.

Hi, we opened our panel, and everything liked fine. How did you get a copy of the schematic?
I have tried the "normal" and the "hi temp" buttons back and forth between the "heated Dry" and I cannot get mine to light up. I have the 665.1376, but ultamateky the same buttons as other members. Any other suggestions for this model?

I have a Kenmore Ultra Wash Quiet Guard 3 and the sequence as follows worked for me: heated dry-normal wash-heated dry-normal wash. Wait just a few secs and the lights on the panel will light up and then going into a Quick Rinse cycle. Cancel the cycle and resume your wash normally. Good Luck!

HI - too have the "ultra wash quiet guard (medel 665.1376). which light was blinking first? Mine is the "Normal wash".
Thanks

It should be the button with the picture of a "lock".

Wow. I have been w/out dishwasher for over a month, too. I read the manual and decided I must need a new heating element for my Kenmore 665.172... because the green light flashed. I went by Sears, even, and they told me no one would have the. I called and ordered the part. The rep read me a bunch of stuff and basically I "signed off" that I understood that part was not returnable. I paid $30 plus shipping. So, I set about replacing it this morning and as I was trying to determine whether I needed to pull the entire washer out to access the terminals I ran across this discussion. Sure enough, I pushed the high temp wash button, then the heated dry button a couple of times, got the full flash, and Voilą!

Sears is ripping off a lot of folks. What's the deal? Do we have any other recourse? I suppose just getting this out is one way to discourage the brand...

Many thanks!

I too was able to use the info on this site to reset my Kenmore Elite dishwasher and save myself an expensive service bill. I tried the first time with the door open though and found that didn't work, but after closing the door & trying again it worked perfectly. PTL

Thank you so very much! I haven't been able to use my dishwasher now for about three weeks, it's been driving me crazy! My husband is an electrician and he looked into it and couldn't figure out what was wrong. This information was exactly what it took to get it up and running, and I didn't even have to go broke to do it!
God Bless web sites such as this.

My "clean" light is flashing on model 665.15932. I was going to reset using all the suggestions on this site but my dishwasher does not have a "heated dry" button. Does anyone know the reset sequence for this model?

Many have suggested starting the 16.5 minute diagnostic and self calibration cycle but cancelling immediately. I think you'd be better off letting the machine finish. Either way will clear the error code but letting the full cycle run is like letting a tune up for free.

Pull the toe kick panel by removing two screws and you can read the "for technicians only" instructions taped to the inside to see how to do it on your specific model. If there is an error after the self-diagnosis is over, don't despair... most of the parts are available on line or at your local appliance parts depot, and all the parts can be installed with a screw driver and some patience.

I have a Kenmore model 665 749632. The following sequence worked for me:

Press Normal wash, then heated dry. Repeat 5 times.
All the lights on the panel came on.
Close door. Press Start. Open door. Press Cancel 2 times.
Thanks for this website! It's Dec. 22, I have 10 people here for the holidays and having the dishwasher broken down was a little stressful! Sears wanted $75 to come to the door, and the earliest appt. was for Dec. 28th. Now I can enjoy my grandkids vs. washing dishes!!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!

Thank you so much! I did exactly what you said and my dishwasher is working fine. I was so stressed that I was going to have to pay to have someone come out to fix it and there's no way I can afford that right now. Thanks again.

Follow-up question - any thoughts on if you follow the "hi temp wash" and "heated dry" routine, all the lights come on... and then they never go back off? Am I officially fried?

My washer appears to be properly reset and working. I unfortunately am not sure which sequence order I used (normal wash-heated dry or the other way around) but I did find I had to have the door fully close for the reset to be done.

I had the same thing happen to me but found that when I closed the door then went through the reset sequence, the lights went out as described in the other posts. The reset was then successful for me.

I found part of a plastic cutting mat that had been burned. I am hoping that is the only reason for the shut down and no repair will have to be made. After trying the button sequence mentioned in the earlier posts it is working fine.

All, if you have the control on the top of the dishwasher, once all the lights come on, you have to shut the door and then it starts a cycle.

I found this site quite awhile ago & have used the reset feature often.
Now the dishwasher shuts down every time it is used. 7 flashes of the green light.

How or where can I find more info on what needs repaired. It is obviously past just needing a reset everyday & something is now wrong. Is it just a heating elelment or thermister that I can change out?

Thanks, Mark

If it doesn't heat (or sense that the water is heated) up the water to the temperature expected, then it will error every time. If you watch the cycle, wait for it to error out, then open the dishwasher you can make the conclusion:
If the water in the tub is hot, then your heater is fine and it's your thermistor.
If the water is not hot, then it's your heating element.

It sounds like what ever it is, was going bad intermitently... now it's failed completely.

I should note our model was 665.1483 or some business like that (it's running now or I would look) but I pushed the normal wash, heated dry, normal wash, heated dry, normal wash, heated dry, in that order, just like that and now it's going! Good luck!

Reset using sequence of pressing buttons on control panel and found it to work, however, before normal wash cycle completed itself on first test run, the dishwasher reverted back to blinking clean light again. Is it possible that some glass or debris is caught in chopper. If so, how do I remove lower assembly to clean?

Goose14,

I also do still occasionally have the issue of the computer system getting confused even though I've reset it. I just reset the computer again with the normal wash/heated dry buttons, wait for it to start up again, then press the Cancel/Drain button. It will make a sound like it drains (but there is nothing to drain) and then I quickly press it again to shut it off. Typically if I give it a little time before just starting the cycle from the beginning again I have no issues and it gets through a whole wash.

One thing I did want to say though, in response to your question about glass was that YES, I did notice that our washer was NOT cleaning nearly as well as it did when we first got it. This issue happened around the same time that the computer panel started going nutty. I looked at the manual and it turns out for our model there are no removable filters to clean, so that was out.

However, I did solve the issue and now it's running GREAT. All I did, was what I figured a repair man would do: took out the drawers, removed the parts screwed into the washer that spray the water (the arm running along the back and top and the bottom spinner), then used a star screwdriver attachment for my drill to remove the actual screen at the bottom where the water drains and the food catches to (in theory) be ground up. Once that top plate with the screen is removed I simply removed the cover to the grinding device. Getting access to these areas showed me the issue: glass pieces, fruit pits/seeds, and all other bits of things accumulated over the years that the grinding mechanism wouldn't get rid of! So I got all the pieces out carefully and then put all the parts back together, cleaning off the "gook" that built up over the years.

Worked like a charm! Good luck!
Heather
