I've been to look at a puppy that was attacked by a feral cat. To cut a long story short should I be more concerned than I am about whether he should have antibiotics in case of any diseases the cat may have. The wound looks clean and is starting to dry and the swelling has gone down.

Where is this puppy now? If he is wounded you should bring him to a vet if you adopt him, or make sure he gets to one.

These wounds often close with infection trapped inside - I would get the puppy checked out by a Vet and probably placed on antibiotics just to be extra safe.

When ever you bring home a new puppy, it's always a good idea to do a meet and greet with your vet. Seeing as he has a wound, it seems like it would be the best to make a visit to make sure pup is up to date with vaccines and dewormers and flea treatment.

Do you know what the current owners are doing to keep this wound clean? Usually when it dries up, and the swelling reduces, it means it's not infected, however I am not a vet, and I can not see the wound. It's always best to get proper medical care from your vet. None of us can diagnose or treat online.

The puppy is still with the breeder he is having his first vacc this week. Not sure what it has been cleaned with but think I will go to vets with her and ask the vet myself. As you say I'm worried the infection could be there even though swelling has reduced. Thank for all your comments

I would think you should be concerned about rabies if the attack was from a ferrel cat.

Antibiotics is a must if ever an animal fights with another animal for any cirucumstance. If blood is drawn, then infection can and will set in. Animals have very dirty mouths and they walk in dirt and feces.. Infection comes from that.
