My sump pump malfunctioned on me twice when we had heavy downpours of rain causing my basement to flood. The sump pump did not turn on. I bumped the pipe and the sump pump turned on but was too late. How do I set up another sump pump for back up?

Hi Richard...
Usually, you will install a backup pump in the same pit (if deep enough) and you will set the pump about 6-8" higher than the primary pump.
You can install a new sump pump or a battery back-up sump pump to protect in cases of power outage. The battery back-up system requires a marine type battery but they are great if power ever fails during/after a storm.
Check out the battery back-up pumps at:

In my opinion, zoeller also make the most reliable sump pumps on the market.
