"I need to get upper and bottom dentures. The problem, I have a terriable gag reflex that will effect the upper dentures. I have to much bone loss to get dental implants, so I would have to wear a full plate on top. I read an answer by BRUCErulz that an upper denture does not have to go past the hard palate. When I told the dentist this he said then I would have no suckon to hold the plate in place. He told me I would get tired of having to use an adhesive . Would an adhesive hold them in place to keep them secure if the plate was not past the hard palate? I don't want to get upper plates if I can never wear them. This is causing me sleepless nights. What can I do to make this situation better?"

If I get Hypnotised will it help with my gag reflex for wearing upper dentures? I need upper dentures and have a really bad gag reflex. My dentist suggested getting hypmotised to help with this problem. Will it really work?

I'm not sure about that. Have you considered implants instead of a full upper denture?

You should try to find a denturist who is highly recommended. Denturists deal with these problems day in and day out and would be able to give you more information to make an educated decision.
Did your dentist discuss the possibility of doing a bone graft to build up the dental ridge to support implants?
A specialist who might be able to help is a prosthodontist or a periodontist.

flossie, do you know if the information I read on this site is true about the upper palate does not have to go past the hard palate and will it stay in with an adhesive?
