We have a hitachi 50 inch plasma that has, for an unforseen reason, just stopped working. It has power, but the power indicator light blinks morse-code style three times in a row. No picture, no sound, just blinking. The hitachi customer service rep I spoke with tells me the blinking indicates "internal failure"... duh, as nothing external caused the stoppage. Any ideas, comments, dedications, requests? I am really hating this happened on football day.

Well, being that it's a plasma, it will probably not be very economical to have it repaired. Unless you have an extended warranty or service plan of some kind, I would say it is time to start saving up for a new one.
You could have someone come out to your home to diagnose the issue. It's usually around $100-$200 for an in-home diagnostic of what is wrong with the TV. Most places will then credit the diagnostic toward the parts and labor of repairing the unit. I would say most repairs of plasma TVs run around $800-$1000. So this is why I say it is best to buy a new one.
I know you can easily find name brand 50" plasmas for around $1000-1500.
