I'm replacing my bathroom sink and have a problem with deciding on what to do about the trap arm for the new sink. After I removed the old bathroom sink I found that the trap arm was soldered into the 1.50 inch copper elbow stubout in the wall. Let me explain what I think they did. It looks like there is a 1.50 inch:confused: copper elbow stubout and in that elbow they soldered a piece of copper tubing, cut and bent back the copper tubing and inserted the 1.25 inch trap arm for the p trap. Should I cut the trap arm and use a coupling to attach the new trap arm or should you unsweat all the piping back to the elbow and sweat in a new trap arm ?

What I would do is take all the fittings off back to the stubout. I would then solder on a slip by male 1 1/2" threaded adapter and convert to PVC using a female 1 1/2" PVC adapter. Sound like a plan? Regards, Tom

speedball1: Thank you very much for answering my question. Because of my lack of plumbing knowledge I donot know what a slip by male 1.5" threaded adapter is. Is this a piece of copper pipe with threads on the outside of the copper pipe ? Then I think the PVC adapter would screw on to the copper pipe to connect a PVC trap arm and p trap.

This is a 1/2" slip,(over copper) by male thread adapter. Just ask for one in 1 1/2". You may then thread a PVC female adapter on the male end and you have converted to PVC from copper. Don't forget to Teflon tape the threads. Good luck, Tom
