Any medical professionals here? I have been googling stomach ulcers, after my doctor stated that I might have them. My doctor stated that I should drink milk and eat dairy products like cottage cheese and ice cream, but according to Google, milk products are NOT good when there are stomach ulcers!

Can anyone help me??

Actually it depends on the particular kind of stomach ulcer.

OK, glad to hear that from a nurse. The stomach ulcer I have might have come from the medications I take. I use Accutane for my acne. Also, I was taking Ibuprofen 800 for a throbbing teeth ache. So I think the combination caused the ulcers. Which kind is that?

Is the tooth still a problem? Are your ulcers bleeding? I landed in the hospital last year with two bleeding stomach/duodenal ulcers, so might be able to give you some up-close and personal information.

I don't think they are bleeding. How can I tell if they are bleeding? The tooth is no longer a problem since I had the root canal started. I no longer take Ibuprofen or anything in the Aspirin family.

Do you have a spot of pain or discomfort in your upper abdomen? Are there any dark streaks or general dark color in your stool?

Before my doctor told me to stay away from the acidy foods, I would feel a strong hunger sensation in my stomach, EVERY 2 HOURS! I would eat a burger or plate of fried chicken and 2 hours later I would have this strong feeling in my stomach as if I were starving. Also, there were nights that I woke up salivating uncontrollably. Saliva literally burst out of my mouth without my control. Then I went to see my doctor who said to stay away from fried food. Since then I have only eaten ice cream, bananas and milk! I no longer have those symptoms so I thought I was doing well. But reading online made me wonder about whether I should be drinking milk.

You want to eat foods that will cushion and protect your stomach -- oatmeal, cottage cheese, yogurt, even milk -- and avoid spicy and other foods that will irritate the stomach lining. Milk isn't bad; it's mostly ineffective.

So milk is OK? My doctor said that milk helps with the healing of ulcers but like I said, I googled and read otherwise. Cottage cheese... never had it. Is that eaten alone of with something else? Give me a list of food that you think is OK to eat. Eating Banana and milk everyday is becoming annoying!

From familydoctor.org --

Certain foods and drinks may be more likely to make your pain worse. These include both regular and decaffeinated coffee, tea, chocolate, meat extracts, alcohol, black pepper, chili powder, mustard seed and nutmeg. You may want to avoid these things if they bother you. But keep your diet balanced. Try eating small, frequent meals when you're having pain.

Would it be OK to eat Roger Woods sausages? I know they have little spices in them... that's why I am skeptical!

Eat them with foods on the list (scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, french toast, oatmeal, etc.), don't eat a lot, don't eat them alone, and don't eat them every day.

Wonder Girl: I read on the link you provided that egg adds a good deal of protein. Do you know if that's boiled egg or scrambled egg?

Edited to say: scrambled eggs are fried... aren't I supposed to stay away from fried food?

I ate tons of scrambled eggs when I had anemia. The frying can be done without butter or other fats -- use Pam spray or a non-stick frying pan. By frying, it means deep fat frying especially -- like deep-fried shrimp and fish and french fries and fried ice cream and fried dill pickles -- when there's a batter or crumb coating and the food is immersed into six inches of fat for so many minutes.

Eat boiled, poached, scrambled, egg salad, and even fried egg -- just be careful about the fat added or used for cooking.
