I got a similar problem like Sonycea, this my scenario, I have just acquired a IBM Laptop R60e, a very recent model, the problem is I cannot communicate with the Laptop on a simple network, I have set all the IP addresses e.g the laptop is 192.168.0.x with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 other PC's have also corresponding IP addresses, the workgroup is the same. I can ping other PCs from my laptop but I cannot ping my laptop from other PC's on the workgroup. The laptop has networks speed of up to 1 Gb/s. Please F1 me  ASAP!

The network IS accessible. You said so yourself "I can ping other PCs from my laptop". The fact that other PC's can't ping you doesn't mean the network is inaccessible. That's actually good news as it points to a setting on the laptop that is preventing a response to the ping.
Check to see if you have the firewall enabled on your laptop. If it is then temporarily disable it and try pinging the laptop from other PC's and see if that makes a difference.
If it doesn't then cut/paste the output of the following command here "netstat -rn" and "ipconfig /all" from both the laptop and the other PC (just pick one of the other PC's).
