My 16-year old Chow mix had a mini-stroke Sunday night. Her back legs weren't working temporarily and her eyes were darting frantically back and forth. We took her to the emergency vet and got her some shots and her eyes have improved but she hasn't eaten since Sunday morning. We took her to our regular vet Tuesday afternoon and we really thought this was the end. After looking at the results of the blood work Sunday, our vet suggested a shot of cortesone to try to stimulate appetite. We went with that option, but are afraid it has only delayed the inevitable. Even though we've tried all of her favorites - bacon, cheese, pasta, green peppers, peanut butter, doggy ice cream - she still refuses all food, although she will drink water and chew on ice cubes. I did have a bit of luck this morning when she drank a few tablespoons of milk I poured onto wax paper on the floor in front of her. Other than not eating, she seems almost normal now and is walking much more steadily and seems alert and responsive. So my question is, what else do you use to tempt your dog with when they refuse to eat? I'm still thinking that getting liquid protein into her in some form may be my best bet.
