I am a 55 yr. old mom who has many medical problems. I have lived in the same place in Lodi, CA. for many yrs. And now that I had to leave my job & apply for ssi I am being evicted. I need a safe place for myself & 2 girls (one with dwarfism) to stay until we have some income coming in

Are they evicting you because of your application to SSI, and you job loss? Or are they evicting you because you have fallen behind on your rent.
If it is the latter, visit your local welfare office, and seek emergency funding to pay the rent up to date. Call social service agenies such as the Salvation Army, Lions, etc. There are resources out there. Do you have unemployment benefits kicking in? If you qualify for being disabled though a confirmation with your Doctor, you should be able to collect unemployment. (I am in Canada though, so this information may not be accurate).
Have you talked to your landlord directly about perhaps paying something toward the rent, until this has all worked out and you have a steady income coming in?
Usually an eviction happens only when all other avenues have failed. It is time and expense he/she would probably rather not have to go through, if there was a workable agreement in place. That you have been there for a long time, suggests that up until your current difficulties, you were able to pay the rent for many years.
If nothing works, and you are forced to move, and you have no money, or little money coming in to pay rent, call all possible sources listed above, and seek assistance. I have known of people who were able to get first/last through just the Salvation Army alone. But, women's shelters, and other welfare services will also help and it's worthwhile seeking their assistance as well.
If you don't have a caseworker with the welfare office, that too, would be a good idea to establish. They are probably the most direct line to help right now.

Have you applied for disability insurance yet? Its taken out of your check weekly already. Usually when you have an extended medical leave you get paid through the program. Also is any of your health problems job related?
