I'm buying a side-by-side 2006 whirlpool fridge from my friend. It was only used for 4 months when my friend purchased an abondaned home and they already hand a stainless steel, so they didn't need it. They were going to use it in their garage to store extra food however, it never cooled (either side). Now, I'm in need of one, so I'm buying it, in hopes that it won't be a costly repair. Since it's been sitting we know it's not in need of being defrosted, when on the fans run and the lights come on. Please advise what I should check first before calling to have it repaired. Also, terrible odor in it since it's sit so long, any hints there appreciated as well. Single mom of two awaits your reply. Thanks.

Does either side cool down properly?
