My psychiatist answered a call from me while another patient was sitting in his office.. the other patient heard the entire conversation and then asked a question in relation to the my copayment for my next visit. The Dr. went on to tell the patient that based on my income he knows I can afford his copay. What he didn't know is that the patient knew who I was and later called me to tell me she heard my entire conversation and didn't think it was appropriate that he discussed my finances with her or took the call in front of her because she could hear the conversation. Was the HIPPA law violated?

HIPAA protects a patient from having their medical diagnosis and treatment being discussed with a third party without their permission. It does not extend to financial dealings with the medical provider. So it would depend on what was actually said on the doctor's side, since I assume the other person couldn't hear your side.

However, it was a breach of ethics to discuss financial info.

So what is it you want to do? Find a new doctor, get the doctor to apologize, what?
