This is a classic riddle - one of my favorites. I won't give away the answer, but here's a hint - try sounding out each sequence in order, like this:

One
One one
Two one
One two one one

And another hint -- the next term in the sequence after 111221 starts with 3.

Oh I agree, I'm just wondering why it's in Math & Science. If it's math, how could you figure it out mathematically? You can't. It's not an equation, the sequence cannot be deciphered using math.

I'd be more inclined to put it in English homework, but then that would mean the OP has the answer to the question. ;)

It might just be a math teacher trying to make people think a bit, or even extra credit. I could easily see a teacher doing this, yes. (But I would hope it wouldn't be for normal credit.)
