Upstairs shower causes leak in garage ceiling below. How do I remove the tub drain to replace seal? Based on past answers by this forum, that would be my first move.

Before you start taking drain apart, you have to determine where is the leak coming from...
1. Do you have access door behind the tub ? Usually, it is located inside closet or hallway. If positive, than open it up, turn shower On, take flashlight and see where is the water coming from.
2. Run Tub only. See if you have leak...
3. Run shower only. See if you have leak.
4. Fill tub, close faucet, wait 30 minutes - and open tub drain. See if you have leak...
5. Make sure the tub oveflow is not loose. If positive, tighten it well
6. make sure you don't have gaps between faucet trim and wall
7. Make sure your spout is not leaking backwards into the wall
If all above turn out to be negative - than open wall behind tub or celing below the tub. You may have leaking trap and /or tub drain.
To remove tub drain there is a special tool you insert into the drain and loosen it. But you will still have to cut ceiling or wall...
Back to you... Milo
