This one has been torturing me for years... desperately searching to a juvenile fiction novel that is similar to the Newbury Award winning book "Hatchet" by Greg Paulsen. Boy crashes in the wilderness, pilot dies. Boy has to survive the winter with the help of a crotchety old man who rescues him. Would have been published sometime prior to 1988, as that's when my 5th grade teacher read it to the class (I'd ask him, but he has since died). Any help in identifying this book would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I found even similar to Hatchet is, "The Blue of The Dolphins".

Thanks, but this was a young boy, 10 to 12, in the mountains and was most likely written in the late 70's/early 80's. I see someone asked about what I imagine is the same book several years ago, but never received an answer.

Thanks for your help though.

Try Jean George... She has a trilogy.. one of the books is "My Side of The Mountain"... can't remember the other two. Amazon has them... Good Luck.:)
Gary Paulson has a lot of books about the same character "Brian"in his other books.
There is a continuing series of Hatchet.
