Strengthening your abs is a good way to loose belly fat but please don't look at the pics on TV and hope you are going to look like that. I don't know if you are man or woman but some of those ads if you look closely, the abs are stencilled on. Your genetics has a lot to do with your body build, just do the best you can. If you Google 'crunches' you will find many websites that show you how to reduce our midsection this way; this is what strengthens your abdominal muscles to reduce the appearance of fat.

Diet. Bodybuilders have a saying "Abs are build in the kitchen, not the gym". This means that 90% of visible abs is down to diet, not workouts. Everyone has a six pack, but most of the time they are covered with a nice layer of fat.
As a general rule, belly fat tends to respond well to a reducing carbs. Cut out the white carbs: sugar, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, cereals. Eat protein, healthy fats and lots of green vegetables.
In the gym, concentrate on compound lifts. It sounds wrong but barbell squats Barbell Squat (http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Quadriceps/BBSquat.html) work the core muscles harder than crunches or sit-ups, and they also work the rest of the body and burn lots of calories too.

Cardio like walking on the treadmill or the exercise bike helps reduce belly fat along with core strengthing exercises like crunches the balance ball and also yoga helps strengthen your abs. But definitely cardio it worked for me. Good luck.
