View Full Version : Ceiling fan wiring

I have an older type but in good condition ceiling fan with light. I have wired it up in what I thought was the right way. When I turn the light on at the wall switch the globe glows dimly and the fan spins slowly. This would suggest that somehow 1/2 of the 240VAC is being dropped across the fan and 1/2 across the globe (I'm in Australia). The fan shouldn't come on at all. If I leave the light on and turn the fan to high, the light goes off and the fan spins quickly. When the fan is switched to medium (light on), the light comes on dimly and the fan slows down again.

The wire colours into the fan are blue, black & white (plus an earth). The white connector seems to be directly connected to the active terminal for the light globe. The wires coming out of the ceiling are also blue, black & white. I have connected these to their respective fan colours.

Does anyone have a pinout for this fan?

The fan is a Reef Breeze RB1204SH of which there is absolutely no info on the net. What am I doing wrong? Any help appreciated.

Matt. :)
