I am the only female in the Grounds Dept at a local resort Ranch. I started as 3wk temp to weed the grounds. I was kept on at 40 hrs until summer hours caused cut backs. Grounds crew duties are varied: planting, guest svr, property mnt, pest control, etc. After 5months I have never been trained in any other aspects other than weed control. I've been told the following in one form or another weekly in response:You were hired as a temp, just go do your weeds, go do whatever it is you do, transfer to housekeeping,I'm not training any more people they just leave, too busy, too stressed by new mgmt, not my job.
I've also been told not to talk to any other ranch workers outside the grounds dept. it is considered socializing. Even to ask about overlapping work duties, or ask where someone/something is located on a 650 acre spread.
I've had tools taken from my hand, given a hula hoe & told I don't need any other tools to do the job. Ie: weed removal, tree trimming, general property cleaning duties covering about 1/4 mile. When it hit 110 outside & I was working a large area w/ very heavy clearing to be done I asked if someone could help me w/ this. I was told just do what you can. The next day I am asked why it's taking so long to finish up the project! I'm also reminded to take lunch breaks but then told I am seen wondering around not working! All this in a 24hr period. It gets worse w/ no help from mgmt, except I get written up for substandard work, and my co workers go about running off to get stoned and look busy. Did mention I'm paid minimum wage, work less than 24 hrs pr week, co workers(seniority) work 36 hrs and make about 10 pr hr. Oh yeah they always have to leave early because of overtime issues! Meanwhile I carry the work load every day doing my job and picking up the slack from them! It has gotten so that I don't sleep, I am a nervous wreck wondering if I have a job every morning, and wonder why I keep going back! Advice please! Thank you!
