My kid is in his second year of middle school and he's loving it.

Coming from Elementary, you will find it a big change. The kids are taller and there is a lot more going on. My son had a tough first year because they basically treated you like a grown up and were VERY particular about getting organized. Here are some tips:
1) Pay close attention to what you are required to do - write it down and don't be shy about asking someone if you don't understand something. Preferably ask the teacher so you don't have any confusion
2) Plan on spending more time on homework that before. You will get projects in most of your classes so don't sign up for a million other extra-curricular activities... this is something your parents need to understand as well
3) Enjoy yourself - even though it was hard, it was a lot of fun and he learned a lot in that year.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Middle school is just another school!
Even though you are worried, please don't be!
Yes, you will have more classes, more responsibilities and a lot of homework, but you will have more oppertunities to meet new people and learn great things.
This is the time to discover your interests and start making goals for your future along with friendships to last a lifetime! This is YOUR time, so enjoy it, and don't let anyone else ruin it.
Bullies are only mean because they are hiding something that is wrong with-in and not worth giving them the time of day, As hard as it is!! I hope that you are having a great time!

Now that you are there, you see that all the worry was for nothing, right? :)

This is the same advice I always give students about Bullying.

There are going to be so many changes in Middle School you may not even have to deal with them.

Were you bullied by any of these kids?

If they talk behind your back, and spread rumors or something of that nature that is bullying.

In most states there are laws against it.

Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself and tell them to leave you alone. Do this in front of a teacher.

Don't be afraid to talk to the principal. He can stop it and they will never know who told him... that is your right and he has to let you remain anonymous.

Always have materials you need for each class. i.e. calculator, pens , papers.

Always be respectable too your teachers. Use a pleasant voice and keep eye contact.

Try not to be tardy. Have your homework and make it neat.

Dress appropriately. Always follow the Dress Code.
Read your School Handbook and know ALL the zero tolerance rules.

Be kind and never pick on someone who isn't popular or who isn't as fortunate as you.

If those mean kids start, ignore and walk away . If they keep it up do as I told you. It's not tattle telling when it's something interfering with your ability to learn.

Don't carry a cell phone unless it's allowed and keep it turned off.

If you live in the US, forty-seven states have anti-bullying laws.

Bullying is when someone puts their hands on you in order to inflict pain.

Calling you names or spreading rumors.

Making it impossible for you to concentrate on studying.

Saying inappropriate things about you such as name calling or anything about your appearance.

Bullies run in groups of two or three because they are afraid to attempt it on their own.

Cyber bullying is also against the law... Cyber bullying is sending pictures or ugly text messages by cell phone or computer.

Stand up straight and tall and be proud of yourself.

You can tell your parents or a teacher. The days of it being not cool to tell are over.

Document what was said. Keep any emails or text messages they may send. Show them to your parents.

Tell.. you may be helping someone else.

Have a great year.:)

Every other 6th grader are the same kids that were all 5th graders last year, and the kids are no different from what they were at the last day of school last year.

Classes are just moving forward from what was learned last year.

There is no reason to be scared. Middle school is just another journey in your life. You will face many new roads in life. When you get to high school, you will feel likewise but it's just a change in your life and nothing. Middle school means that you are no longer a little kid.

It means that you are on your way, slowly but surely, into the teenage years (the best years of your life). I went to middle school from 1977 to 1979 (grades 6-8). I surely would love to go back to my middle school years.

At 45, I often ask myself, what happened to me? Why is my hair all gone? In other words, don't rush to become an adult. You are living the best years of a person's life.
