I have a one year old pit that I adopted from the pound about 3 months ago, but any way I feed him kind of hard but he won't gain none at all I tried every thing, I even went and bought some stuff you can put in his food to make him gain but didn't work(some type of red stuff sort of look like ketchup. What do I need to do?

You bought something that looks like ketchup to help gain weight?? Never heard of it.

Pitties gain weight the same way any dog does. Protein! And lots of it.

First and foremost.. get him cleared by the vet for worms or any other type of parasite. Worms, giardia, coccidea and other things will make it very hard for dogs to gain weight no matter how much you feed them.

Get your pup on a good quality food. You want a food that is high in protein and low in fat. Protein for dogs helps them gain good weight. Fatty foods will make your dog gain weight in an unhealthy way. Foods I would recommend would be Innova. Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul: Adult, Call of the Wild, Wellness and **** Van Pattens Natural Balance.

If he is real thin, you might want to consider feeding three times a day... Two normal feedings (about a cup and a half) morning and night and half a cup in the afternoon. You can also feed butter (a sliver) once a day. Butter is fat, but its "good" fat. You can also feed 1/4 cup cottage cheese once a day as well. There is also another remedy... they are called satin balls. I, personally haven't tried them, but heard great things.. Here is a website with a recipe How to: Make Satin Balls or Fat Balls [Archive] - DogForum.net | Dog Forums and Community (http://www.dogforum.net/archive/index.php/t-5191.html)

I have also heard that feeding macaroni (plain noodles) helps gain weight.

Also.. does your dog gulp food? If your dog gulps food, that will actually prevent him from gaining weight as well. There are special bowls made for food gulpers.. You can also put water in the food as well to help slow down the eating..

Hope this works for you

Good Luck

I wouldn't advise to feed table scraps. Dogs need to eat dog food. It makes for a happier owner and a less annoying dog. A treat now and then is OK. But don't rely on table food to get your dog to eat his kibble. Human food is very high in fat and salt.. Feeding table scraps will make your dog gain unhealthy weight. You want him to gain muscle weight, not fat. Feeding the right things will make him gain muscle weight which is what you want.
