My HVAC service company replace my capacitor on my 3 ton A/C air handler this past spring. Soon there after I had a non-starting fan. I was told I needed to replace the fan.

I had the time, so I ordered the fan for my air handler (Goodman GMNT080-4B - furnace - air handler) and installed it without replacing NOR checking the capacitor as basically, I did not know I should replace the capcitor nor did I know they cost $6 - $15. Everything worked until last week. The fan was diagnosed as "bad" again. This made me wonder, so while taking out the fan I also removed the capcitor and took it in to Johnstone when I picked up my motor. When I showed it to the sales person, they told me they thought that it was the wrong capacitor (25.0 440 V) and they were right. The correct capacitor was a 12.5 330v for the 1/3 horse power motor.

I eventually had to replace the control board (scortched on the backside) and the air handlker door open switch to get the unit running again. My question, could the over sized capacitor have ruined the panel and switch on the door panel in addition to overloading and burning up the fan motor?

I would also like to know, is this capacitor a run or a start capacitor?
