I've installed a new Moen shower-tub faucet (http://www.moen.ca/ecatalog/detail/adler/chrome-posi-temp-r-tub-shower/_/R-CA-CONSUMER%3AL82839) (L82839) according to the included installation instructions, with witch I have a problem.

When I turn the handle from the off position (6 o'clock) to the on position (12 o'clock) water flows from both the shower head and sprout. When I turn the handle to 9 o'clock or 4 o'clock water only comes out of the sprout. In between these settings water flows from both.

This happens both with the sprout installed and without the sprout attached to the waterline.

Any ideas what the problem might be and how to fix this (Is it water pressure or is the cartridge broken,. )?

Did you installed the body the right side up ?

Yes, I installed the body the right side up (with the edge/rim up).

I could be wrong... but the symptoms described are consistent with body installed sideways or upside down...

I would double check on the installation first. Remove round trim, take flash light and see if the "SH" imprinted on the rough body is in upper position... Thank you

Thank! I triple checked, but the side where it says up is on the top side, same as all my other showers...

Water should come out always from the spout... never from the shower. To divert water to shower head, you press diverter knob on top of the spout. Only then you get water from shower head...

Question: what's your water pressure inside the house ?

If the body is installed in correct position, water will always go downward to the spout first. It is the most direct way for water to exit the faucet. No way it will defy laws of physics and will flow upwards.

There is really no mechanism that will stop water from flowing to the spout.

Very obviously, there is something not installed correctly. Close water to the whole house, remove cartridge and make sure it is inserted correctly. Also, see if the spout and /or diverter is not obstructed causing water flow to back up

Before you put trim back on, take a clear photo of the body inside the wall and post it for us to see...

Well, good question about the water pressure. I have no idea. The shower is in the basement.

The only thing I can think of is the 90 degree elbow that links the spout to the body that might be causing a backlog of water, since it happens with and without the spout attached.

And I checked again, but the word "UP" is definitely on the top/upper position...

I was waiting for Milo to ask about the water pressure. Purchase a hose bib pressure gage, (see image) and let us know. The only other thing that could cause your problem is if there were back pressure from the spout feed. Perhaps some something is in there. Do you get a full stream with the spout removed? Let us know about the house pressure. By the way, how many inches is the raiser from the valve to the drop eared ell at the shower head? Back to you, Tom

Sorry for the late response, but I was sick and then the baby was sick, so I didn't have time to look at it. Anyway...

I got one of those pressure gages and the pressure is at least 80 psi (there is some water leaking from the showerhead when it is turned to the off position). Water flies straight out of the spout connection to the other side of the bathtub when the spout is not connected (and even then water comes out of the showerhead, enough to have a normal shower)...

Sorry, what do you mean with raiser (sorry, not a plumber)

I am thinking to maybe put a valve on the two waterlines and closing it a bit to reduce the pressure down the line. Would that work?

What Tom is asking you the raiser length see your image below I marked for you he needs to know how many inches is that pipe, and 80 psi pressure is on the high side it should be 45-60 psi, check if you have a PRV installed see the image below, and some one will tell you how to adjust the pressure, Thanks.
