I replacing a pull chain on my ceiling fan with one from the local hardware store as one is not available from the manufacturer, it is a 4 wire 3 speed pull chain with L& 1,2,3 I need to figure the wire sequence on a pulchain with black,white,red & blue wires, also the old pull chain was letters A-B-C-D I can't locate my notes about wire placement on it as it was lost while remoddling. Can any one help me or dose anyone have a similar pull chain, also so wondering if a L-1-2-3 pull chain will work with a fan that used to have a A-B-C-D pullchain.

Your switch MIGHT switch the windings on the motor as opposed to monkeying with the capacitor leads. Having a single capacitor would be a good clue.

Do you own an ohmmeter?
