There is a home on my street that has been abandoned. There was no mortgage on it and they just couldn't sell it. What happens in this case? Does the property if no taxes are paid on it, revert to the county or city that is in? Is the former owner liable for anything?

They own it until the property is seized by the sheriff and auctioned at a tax sale. The owner then would collect any ammounts gained in excess of the taxes owed and any penalties.

They also have a period to claim it even after that sale... if they pay the costs.

Eventually the county will seize it for unpaid taxes.

Why do you ask? Are you interested in buying it?

This is an assumption that the taxes are not being paid, I would guess. A property owner would likely get far less money allowing the property to be auctioned for back taxes. He'd be better off to keep lowering his sales price until the property is bought. Did someone tell you the taxes are not paid?

Hello:

It's also nuts to think that NOBODY would buy it for even $20. Something isn't right here.
