I know the retention period for judgments is 5 years, however, from what date does this 5 year period start? Is it:

1. From the date the judgement is obtained in court?
2. From the date that the credit bureau’s capture your information onto their system? (I have noticed that all the dates captured on all 3 credit bureau’s are different and do not correspond with the judgement date issued.)

The reason I ask is, what if someone has obtained a judgement against you in Dec 2005, but the credit bureau only captures the judgement information against you on their system in Dec 2006. Does the retention period end in Dec 2010 or Dec 2011?

If you are asking how long a credit bureau can keep an entry on their records, I think its 7 years from when they first listed it.

Hi, thanks for answering, but what I need to find out is, does the judgement retention period start from the date the court issued the judgement or as and when the credit bureau's decide to list you on their systems?

Well first I think your 5 year is in error, but it is from date of record ( date of court action) The court date should be the date of action. If something is showing up after its period you may notify them to have it taken off.
