View Full Version : My mom is a fish killer.

First my mom didn't check her ammonia levels and put the fish in the pond, one jumped out (were assuming from high ammonia levels, which burnt him) he got a fungal infection and I got it treated and now he is on the road to recovery. Well yesterday she took the cover off the filter to clean it, and for some odd reason, she through the uncovered filter back in the water, the propeller bit cut on of the little fishies face, he has no lips and his one gill is damages (as far as I can see), he still somehow manages to eat and he is swimming fine, but what do I do!! I don't want the poor thing to suffer, but since he seems normal..
I just don't know!

I think you either take him to a tropical fish store (and, yes, they have them in my area) or you wait and see what happens next.

It is kind of dramatic to claim your mother as a fish killer. Fish die very easily...
If you think your mother does not take care of them well, even though they are your fish then how about you take all the responsibility of taken care of them and see how well you do?

I know Emily from her various threads and this was VERY tongue in cheek, intended as humor.
No reason to go on the attack here - she's a teenager, interested in animals and I thought that was one of the better headings.

Sorry for your loss! Your mom didn't kill your fish on purpose.

Not going on the attack just given advice.

I guess it's a difference of opinion but I don't see that "If you think your mother does not take care of them well, even though they are your fish then how about you take all the responsibility of taken care of them and see how well you do?" is anything but critical. I don't see the advice - but then again, you're a relationship expert and I'm an unknown expert and we're both on the fish board.

Lol My mom kills my fish too.. I have a tank full of South American cichlids.. once they got bigger, they started fighting. So my mom took out the aggressive fish and put him in a tank with no filteration or air... Nice, huh? Another time one of my fish was injured from a fight. She pulls him out and sticks him in a cylinder type bowl. He had air this time, but anything that is cylinder shaped puts too much pressure on the ears. He ended up dying. She told me she wasn't going to do anything with my fish because she ends up killing them.. About 3 weeks ago, my large pleco died. Instead of pulling him out of the tank, she left his dead body in the tank over night. My oscar lived! Thank god.. but she completely poisoned the tank! I had to do a double water change.. ugh.
As long as the fish can eat and breath he'll be OK. These guys are relatively tough. You might want to go to the store and get a liquid bandage for fish. You can cover his wounds with it to keep infection out.

I believe that people who own pets should know how to take care of them properly, so that they get the love and care that they need. I also believe that if you own a pet, that YOU should be the one who takes care of them, not Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, etc...
Not everyone knows how to care for fish and other animals.
Emily, I would take the fish to the pet/tropical store so that they can give you more info on how you should handle your fishies no lips. I only say that because it might be in pain and suffering.
Good Luck.

How can a fish live with no lips?

Where does anyone see that these are Emily's fish? I thought this was her mother's fish pond.
Do you eat fish? I was vegetarian for quite a while. I still don't eat fish based on the fact that they suffocate. There's no quick kill.

Woah, This is my mom's fish , and obviously if I am on here asking I am looking for help for them and not wanting them to suffer. Also Jesushelper, I have my own fish tank with over 60 fish in it, none have died, so I can raise fish just fine thanks.
"I believe that people who own pets should know how to take care of them properly, so that they get the love and care that they need. I also believe that if you own a pet, that YOU should be the one who takes care of them, not Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, etc....."
Now, usually I am not one to get mad about a post, but this makes me infuriated. If you knew anything before making assumptions you would know that I am 16 years old, the ONLY reason I have a job is to take care of the animals I own. I buy the food, the bedding, the toys, pay the vet bills (Which have amounted to over $3000 alone this year), research the best food for them , give up going out with friends because my dog needs a haircut or my ferret's need there cage scrubbed, I give my animals my time and energy, I love all of my pets dearly and would give my own life to save them. I help whenever I can with My mom's animals but I have my own to care for. I helped pay for her dog when he needed vet care , I paid to have him put down to end his 2 years of suffering, I paid for him to be cremated so she could always have him with her. Now please do not going around making assumtions on how I raise MY animals based a 2 sentence question about someone else's fish!
And by the way, none of the fish have died I have went out and bought the medication, the ammonia tests, the ph test, EVERYTHING to get them healthy! So technically no, my mom isn't a fish killer, it is a JOKE haha? No you probably don't get it.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and I guess it's off to the fish store I go :)

I was making a blanket statement.
I don't know who's fish this is, whether they are yours, your Mothers, or the neighbors. I do, however, believe that people who do own pets should know how to care for them. Don't you agree?
When I opened my statement, it was with "I believe" not "Emily" That is what I mean by blanket statement. I am sorry if I offended you. Not my intention.
I can clearly see that you do care, or else you wouldn't be here asking.
If they do belong to Mom, then perhaps she get a book or utilize the internet for more research on who to care for those types of fish, or any for that matter.
Again, sorry if I offended you.

I think the capital YOU is the trigger here -

I had a goldfish a few years back who had a deformed mouth. One side completely caved in so when you looked at him straight on his mouth made like a crescent moon shape. He was like that when I got him as an adult fish. He had a hard life, a friend of my mothers had 2 of them and they lived in a dogs water bowl... yes that's right, a dogs water bowl. She never fed them, they just eat the bits of food that fell out the dogs mouths when they drank. How they didn't get eaten is beyond me.
Anyway, after I 'saved' him he was fine, he could eat OK I just had to crush up the flake smaller for him. I had him for quite a few years before he finally died.

They sort of look like Barney Fife. I mean the big fish do. The big eyes and the big lips. Bless their heart.:)

I liked the title. I have a thread floating around here titled "Fish killer". Emily I know you love and care for all of your animals, you are a very responsible 16 year old. It sounds like maybe your mom is a bit pre occupied? I don't know anything about fish, after all I am the original fish killer.

Haha, she doesn't understand about cycling the pond/tank or anything, after the little incident she won't touch the water, now she probably won't touch the filter. She feeds them and named them (how she can tell tem apart is beyond me) so she does care and such but she just doesn't know :p she thinks you can toss a fish in water and it'll be fine haha.

It seems that you have more knowledge about your fish than your mother, so you should try to take care of him rather than your mother. You should try to take him to a tropical pet store and try to be careful with him. Good luck!

They live in a pond, they don't really need to be taken care of, at least not that much. They need to be fed and that's about it. We don't change the water unless it has an algea problem (Which it hasn't), she is able to feed them.

Yes.. There is liquid bandage for pond fish.. Any fish really..
Its inexpensive and will help keep any type of infection out, which is really the only thing you can do for a fish. As long as its eating and doing OK, I see no need to panick.
Bandage Liquid New Skin - Compare Prices, Reviews and Buy at NexTag - Price - Review (http://www.nextag.com/bandage-liquid-new-skin/shop-html)
If you feel as if the fish is suffering, you can also put it down. There is a blue liquid that will kill the fish instantly... supposibly no pain. No sure where to get that at.
But.. If its eating, it'll be fine. The only time you panick, is when the fish doesn't eat. Fish that don't eat, are dead fish.

I've always used the freezer for sick fish. Water slowly gets colder and puts them to sleep. Supposedly no pain because their body just starts to slow down until it stops.
