An evolutionary biologist would do a better job at answering your question. However, an answer would probably go along these lines..

Animals with larger brains than a cockroach, e.g. dogs and cats need a better way to carry their brains around. Four legs is better suited to this tasks. Because dogs and cats are reasonably intelligent four legs also allows them to make better use of their brain capacity, e.g. hunting as opposed to scavenging ( cockroaches are very good at scavenging).

If you are asking what are four legs for? What are six legs for? Then you are wanting a teleological explanation. If this is the case then you are in the right section.

A teleological argument can be used to defend the Argument From Design. Everything in this word is the product of design by God. God designed animals with four legs and six legs for a purpose.

Opposed to this idea is evolutionary theory which claims animals have developed legs through natural selection. Four legs have certain advantages over six legs when animals come under environmental pressures e.g. Darwin's finches and beak shape. In other words, four legs developed out of biological necessity. As said before I probably need the help of a biologist here.

A teleological argument attempts to answer the question what is the purpose of four legs? what is the purpose of larger brains? And what is the purpose of six legs?

Evolution doesn't talk about PURPOSE it talks about FUNCTION of legs, brains etc.


As far as the original question was concerned I was only having a guess. I think there needed to be more information supplied in order to know what he was getting at.

My guess was they were asking about teleology. Naturally, I could be wrong.
