How many kilowatts will a 16 seer central air system in New York (1200 sq ft home w/ average insulation) save over a 13 seer system? For this size home is it even worth investing in a more efficient system? I am looking at a 2.5 ton condenser so we have the ability to add a room in the future.

First you will have to pick the exact brand and model number of units you want to compare. Then calculate the exact run time for both units based on your area you live in. The run time times the KW rate will show you the difference in usage. Then multiply the usage times each unit separately and subtract the 16 SEER from the 13 SEER and you will be pretty close to cost savings. There are programs to do the math available but to be extremely accurate you will have to do or have done a Manual J for your house.

Sorry but there is no easier way to do it and be close to accurate. Most HVAC dealers will provide this service to there customers who are looking to buy new equipment.
