My late brothers vehicle has been impounded by the police because of a criminal investigation in which the accident was not his fault.the impound fees are adding up to 5000.00.he had just liability on the vehicle.who is liable for the impound fees.

The Police garage is charging inpound fees? In my area the car is held until the investigation is complete at no charge, the owner is then notified to come and get it, at that time a daily rate begins to be charged.

What are the circumstances here?

In my area only the owner of the car can pick the car up from impound - a third party can pay the fees with written, notarized consent of the owner.

Thank you first for answering my question.the vehicle was impounded in a private towing yard.we were told the fee was now 5000 for the release of the vehicle which we don't have.is there a limit to how long this can go on.
