The well water pump (and all of water treatment system components) is about two months old and has been working fine. However, yesterday the gage pressure read 40 PSI, even though it had been set and working at 50 PSI all this time. Last night while, taking a shower, the water pressure was fine for a little while but then it began to drop until there was hardly any water coming out. What could be the issue?

Could be... bad pressure switch, water logged tank, bad pump motor, etc... would take some time to figure out ?

What u described sounds like your well pump is shutting off because of lack of water.
Did u check the gauge to see what the reading was?
Did the pressure come back? How long did it take and to what pressure did it reach on gauge?
How deep is well?

Thanks for the responses. I thought about your replies and all indications led me to believe the pressure tank was not getting enough water. So I found the issue to be a clogged sediment filter, which I suspect was not replaced by the company that replaced the water system. My thinking is that the pump was having a tough time drawing the water from the well into the tank; shutting off before the tank reached the proper pressure or water level. Anyhow, I cleaned the sediment filter housing and installed a brand new filter and now we have plenty of water pressure.
