I have a Sears 42 inch lawn tractor. Replaced a dead battery. Now when I turn the key to start I hear a whining noise and engine does not turn over. Any suggestions on a FIX?

Sounds like a worn or broken starter motor gear.
In order to check you would have to remove the engine covers.

Tractor & engine numbers would help.

Hi,
To me it sounds as if you hooked the batttery up backwards.
Starter will spin no matter which way connected; pinion will not rise to engage the flywheel.

Thank you. I put the battery i9n the way the old one was but the poles are reversed.
