Ok I'm so confused. Ive never had a problem putting my son to bed, but he has started being very clingy and actually screamed himself to sleep tonight. I can't even leave the room without him crying. What do I do? He was never like this before... by the way he will be one on Wednesday

I know this is going to sound odd but he is showing classic attachment... this is good! Although its not much fun for you.

It means he trusts his environment.

Check there is nothing scaring him in the room with the lights low, check for shadows etc.

Its one thing screaming out of temper, its another screaming out of fear.

Instead of putting him striaght to bed,go into his room with him,sit on a chair feed him his bottle/beaker,and talk quietly to him, maybe read a story.

When he's sleepy place him in his cot,if he kicks up just stroke his head, lay him back down.

Leave the room.

Give him a few minutes, and go back in and soothe him again, but don't speak, keep repeating...

He will get the message that he is not on his own but won't be allowed up out of his cot again nor are you giving him the attention of talking to him.

Its important that he learns to fall asleep on his own.

Its hard to listen to crying when it sounds so heartbreaking ,but stick to the same routine and he will get easier and settle down.

I would take him to the pediatrician. Kids with ear infections can be very cranky and also, sleeping is painful because laying down creates more pressure in the ears. Once you know he's healthy, I'd try the technique suggested in the other answer - only difference is I read that you should not speak to the child but rather just gently lay them down, put the blanket on them and leave the room quietly.
