No, she won't. In fact, she'll live a lot longer if she's doesn't breed.

Breeding a dog takes skill, a lot of money, and knowledge. It's not something everyone should do, and dogs do not need to breed in order to survive. Whoever told you this doesn't know anything about dogs.

It's best to get her spayed, not only will that make her healthier, but it will prevent any unwanted puppies.

Just to put a light on this epidemic of people breeding when they shouldn't, millions of dogs are put to sleep ever year in shelters because people breed when they shouldn't.

Get her spayed, you'll both be happier, and she'll be healthier.

If you don't get her spayed there are health concerns.

Here are some of the benefits of spaying;

* Dogs which are spayed do not experience heat cycles. When a female dog comes into heat, she will bleed from her vagina or vulva and will attract large numbers of male dogs. Spayed female dogs will not come into heat.
* Spaying a female dog removes the possibility of unwanted litters of puppies.
* A spayed female dog cannot experience dystocia or a difficult birth because it cannot become pregnant.
* When spayed at a young age, female dogs experience a greatly reduced chance of mammary or breast tumors as they age.
* Spaying a female dog removes the possibility of deadly uterine infections known as pyometras.

As you can see, the benefits of spaying are great. Unless you're a licensed knowledgeable breeder, which you're not, there's not benefit to not spaying your dog. Spaying is the best choice, not only to avoid unwanted puppies (which can kill her) but to avoid other health concerns.

As for not breeding causing depression, that's a myth, and sadly one that many people still believe, which is why there are so many puppies out there. Over 5 million dogs are killed in shelters every year in the US alone. This is because too many people breed their dogs without knowing what they're doing, without taking the health of their dog and the health of the puppies into consideration.

I've had dogs all my life, none of them ever died because they didn't breed, and I've never bred any of my dogs, and never will. I have three right now, all male, just my preference, and all except the youngest are fixed. The youngest will be going in soon to get the surgery. There are so many reasons in favor of spaying or neutering. There isn't one reason not to.

Great posts as usual A.

Is it at all possible that you read this on someone's online blog? Whoever wrote that didn't know what they were talking about. More than likely it was a breeder creating imaginary excuses to defend their "right" to breed their dog. I have an 8 year old female pitbull that was spayed when she was approximately 5/6 months old. She is a very very happy & silly dog. Do you really believe that any living creature will simply drop dead from depression? C'mon now. Once you spay your dog, continue to give her a lot of love, attention, & training, as I have done. You will have a happy and well balanced dog without all the health issues (as Alty pointed out above) associated with a non-spayed dog.

My sister believes sort of what you do. She thought her dog would be devistated if it could not experience mother hood. She wanted to breed her once, she had homes already for 8 puppies. After researching and talking to breeders she had a stud picked out, hip and eye tests done and was ready to breed her dog. A few weeks before she was going to breed her dog she stumbled upon an article that said dogs don't breed to have children, they don't feel the same about babies as humans do. She researched this more and discovered the benefits to spaying and not
Having a litter of puppies. Since she already had money saved
Up for emergencys while her dog was pregnant (a c-section for example) she went and got her spayed and called of the breeding. She still had a lot
Of money left so she donated it to a shelter near by... She never thought about all the unwanted dogs that were being killed just because no one wanted them (thankfully our shelter is no-kill and will go to the end of the world to work with any problems, like behavioral). She feels
Much better thinking she saved dogs instead of adding to te problem.
