My soon to be ex-husband wants to give me a check for some stuff in the house. I won't release anything until I know the check has cleared.
Since we have declared bankruptcy, I have a "special" account and they won't acknowledge the check for a couple days.
Once they acknowledge the check, can he still put a stop payment on it?

Anyway he could give you cash instead? Since you are going to keep the stuff he wants until the check clears and is paid, he likely won't try to put a stop payment on it.
He can as long as it is being held however. Hold onto the stuff until his bank clears it.

I would not give him his things until you actually have the cash from the check in your hands if you can't get cash up front from him. If he has the money in the bank then why can't he just cash a check, give you the cash and you give him a receipt for the money?

I was thinking the same thing and it would also be fun to make him wait.
