Can anyone help with the title of a film I recently watched?

The film begins with two college students (boy/girl) meeting at a college ball/dance. The girl is a the lead singer in a rock band. The two become a couple and go on a road trip across America. However, the girl has a menal illness and has not been taking her medicine, becomes ill and is pursed by the authorities. Towards the end of the film the girl is found on a beach with a gun about to commit suicide. The film ends with her going back into a secure hospital (she writes a letter which ends 'I feel happy that I know you will always be in my heart.. )

I know the details are a little skechie, but can anyone tell me the name of this film?

Apart from the lead singer of a rock band, it sounds like the movie Mad Love (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113729/). If not, was it made recently?
