I have a 2002 Saturn SC-2 that I drive everyday. The check engine soon light turned on. I checked the manual and it said the light is connected to the gas cap and the first thing you should try is re-fitting the gas cap. That was in August, and I've filled up several times since then. I've checked with mechanic friends and they said I should just ignore it because something isn't letting the light turn off.

Does anyone know if this is more serious than they're making it out to be?

Take your car to Autozone and they will hook a scan tool to the data link connector and read any codes. You really need to do this. AZO won't charge for this service.

You need to have the codes read.it could be more serious than a gas cap

Usually the check engine soon light is related to an emission related sensor that is out of spec, sometimes it is in the fuel evap system (gas cap not sealing) replace gas cap. Some times it is in the exhaust gas recirculating system. These are pollution regulation systems.
If it is in the exhaust gas recirculation system you may have a situation where the fuel air mixture is not correct and may affect fuel economy and eventually cause premature spark plug fouling.
Some auto parts stores can give you the code but can't tell you what they mean.the best and fastest way to find the answer is to take it to a dealership, they have the proper tools to read your vehicles specific condition
