In the book Number the stars, about chapter one why is it important to be one of the crowd in copenhagen?

Think of it - 1943, German occupation in Denmark, the soldiers ferreting out the Jews, children being stopped and interrogated by German soldiers, the fears Jews and non Jews alike of being arrested and/or taken away or worse. The simple wanting to one of the crowd and draw no attention to one's self.

That is what I get out of it. Perhaps others have different insight.
