I recently had an ultrasound to make sure I have no visible reproductive conditions, as I would like to start planning to have a child in the near future. When I received my results, the doctor explained that everything was normal, however, I had a "failed corpus luteal cyst" on one of my ovaries. I asked what this meant and she explained that it was a very early miscarriage or something to that effect. Is this true? Does a corpus luteal cyst mean that at one point (if only briefly) the egg and sperm had fertilized? Or can a failed corpus luteal cyst be present at anytime, regardless of a woman's sexual activity?

First, please understand that there are no ob/gyn's here.

Yes, it means that at one time the egg was fertilized but failed to develop into a fetus.

Thank you, J_9. I didn't realize my title said ask ob/gyn. Do you know how long these cysts hang around for? I asked the doctor and she said it could have been from months ago.
