Let's see who can solve it.

While exploring the wild highlands of Scotland, Crazy Rob was captured by hostile wood fairies.

Smazze, the powerful chief of the fairies told him he could make one final statement which would determine how he would die.

If the statement he made was false, he would be boiled in water.

If the statement were true, he would be fried in oil.

Crazy Rob found neither of these options to his liking, so he made a statement that got him out of this seemingly impossible situation.

What is the one statement he could make to save himself?

I'm sticking with "you will boil me in water"

If they boil him in water that would make his statement true which means he should have been fried in oil. They can only fry him in oil if he makes a true statemen

One especially for WG.

The paragraph below is most unusual. How quickly can you find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so ordinary you'd think nothing was wrong with it - and in fact, nothing is wrong with it. It is unusual though. Why?

"Gatsby was walking back from a visit down in Branton Hill's manufacturing district on a Saturday night. A busy day's traffic had had its noisy run; and with not many folks in sight, His Honour got along without having to stop to grasp a hand, or talk; for a mayor out of City Hall is a shining mark for any politician. And so, coming to Broadway, a booming bass drum and sounds of singing, told of a small Salvation Army unit carrying on amidst Broadway's night shopping crowds. Gatsby , walking towards that group, saw a youg girl, back toward him, just finishing a long, soulful oration ... "

The above passage is taken from the book "Gatsby" written by Ernest Vincent Wright in the late 1930's

No Kit. :p

Again, use logic. There's nothing mystical about this. The horse is a normal horse, the rope is a normal rope, the hay is an average everyday bail of hay.

So what makes sense?

Read it again. :)

Okay he only has to go ten feet to eat it.

No. Everything in the riddle is true. The length of the rope ,10 feet and the distance of the hay, 25 feet are accurate

Ordinary horse, ordinary rope, ordinary hay, rope 10 feet long, hay 25 feet away. The rope is tied to the horse. How is he eating the hay?

It's really simple. Don't over think it. Go with the simple solution. Remember, the rope is tied to the horse. Hint, hint.

Now try the Gatsby one. That one made me mad. I was looking for grammatical errors (not qualified but looked anyway, couldn't find any), or spelling (qualified but found none), and everything else I could think of. I even started to question whether the story was accurate, but that wasn't it.

When I finally figured it out I wanted to smack my head on a desk. So simple, but something I didn't look at until 2 days after I heard the riddle.

If you don't get it by tonight, I'll tell you. I'm hoping WG will take a look, see if she figures it out. :)

You're getting colder.

Nothing is wrong with the paragraph. Everything is perfect with the paragraph. There's just something unusual about it.

Hint: The thing that makes it unusual has nothing to do with an error, not in the grammatical sense or the story being told. The thing that makes it unusual is barely noticeable, but once you notice it, you'll want to bang your head up against a wall repeatedly for not having seen it before.

Hint #2: When you read it, does it flow easily off the tongue? Wonder why? That may lead you in the right direction, or it may not. It depends. :) No, I'm not being cryptic. ;)

None of the words are wrong. It has nothing to do with punctuation, capitalization, grammar, any of that. It's just unusual. :)

Okay, here's the riddle from Die Hard. When we watched it, I solved it while it was happening on screen, then I spent 3 hours explaining it to hubby. To this day he still doesn't get it. See if you do.

You have a 5 gallon jug and 3 gallon jug and more than enough water. You need exactly 4 gallons of water in order to defuse a bomb. Not one drop more than 4 gallons.

How do you get exactly 4 gallons?

I'll take a stab at it.

I'd fill the 5 gallon jug, and pour it into the 3 gallon. What is left in the 5 gallon jug is 2 gallons. Dump the 3 gallons of water. Mark the point on the 5 gallon jug that is 2 gallons. Pour the 2 gallons into the 3 gallon. Fill the 5 gallon to the 2 gallon mark and between the 2 jugs, you have 4 gallons - or pour the 2 gallons in the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug and there are now 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

I've lost all of you - huh? :p

Aurora_Bell

OR...

Ok, they filled the 3 gallon jug and poured it into the 5 gal. jug. Then filled it again and poured the 3 gal into the 5 gal until it was full.
This left exactly one gallon in the 3 gallon jug.
Then they poured out the 5 gallon jug and put the 1 remaining gallon into the 5 gallon jug. So now there is one gallon in the 5 gallon. Now all you have to do is fill the 3 gal. up again and pour it into the 5 gallon.

Alty
Jul 25, 2010, 08:33 PM
I think you've got it JLo, but there's no marking involved.

Here, maybe this explanation is easier.

1. Fill the 5 gallon jug to the top.
2. Pour water from 5 gallon jug into 3 gallon jug, leaving you with exactly 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.
3. Empty the 3 gallon jug.
4. Pour the 2 gallons you have left in the 5 gallon jug into the now empty 3 gallon jug. You now have exactly 2 gallons in the 3 gallon jug, leaving 1 gallon of space.
5. Fill the 5 gallon jug to the top again.
6. Pour 1 gallon from the 5 gallon jug into the 1 gallon of empty space in the 3 gallon jug giving you exactly 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

Okay, that sounded easier when I wrote it. ;)

Sadly I've heard this one before, and it drove me nuts. There are a few answers to it. I'll give you one of them. :)

First, there are only two actual words in the English language ending in "gry". That part of the puzzle isn't important. The part that is, is this;

There are only three words in "the English language" what is the third word.

The answer is language. It's the third word in "The English Language"

Nope I didn't count those F's. Just the ones in the sentence.

Well you're right. There are 6. Interesting fact though. Most people only count 4. For some reason the f's in of don't register for most people.

Not a riddle, but in honor of our tired brains and the blondes, brunettes, and redheads on this board:

There's a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead and they found a magic mirror. The mirror told them that they it would grant each of them one wish.

So the brunette walks up to the mirror and says, "mirror mirror on the wall, I wish...I could fly." Immediately the brunette started to fly.

Then the redhead walks up to the mirror and says, "mirror mirror on the wall, I wish...I could sing beautifully." So the redhead started to sing.

Next the blonde walks up and says, "mirror mirror on the wall, I wish...I could...ummmm...oh crap!"

Arg, I was so close... but the 'symmetrical' and 'palindrome' are the same for me. Palindromic words have a line of symmetry along the middle letter or between the middle letters.

Bah, I guess I'll just tell. I was thinking about 'writing'.

A piece of writing can flow in the sense that it's easy to read and the ideas fit well.

We always say that words fly, but writing stay, or something similar right?

I go up, but at the same time go down.
Up towards the sky, down towards the ground.
I'm past tense and present tense too,
Come for a ride, just me and you.

Spread? Set?

Nope. Look at the clues again and think of something that applies to all four.

We need more math ones. I solved the 4 gallon one quickly. And I can't believe it took so long for everyone to do the goat. (There's a gazillion versions of that out there.) And I already knew about the missing E's. And kitkat's aren't fair. (The forehead one needs done vocally, not in writing.)

Did anyone ever solve the rope/horse one? Oh yeah, they did, OK. But no one ever solved the wood one.

And some of these are very, very old. I think some of you must be too young. :-)

Unless Unky's still up, am I the only one who has the opportunity to think about this last one?

Oh wait, Unky's on the other side of the world. It's not the middle of the night there.

Well, I can't find a word which matches all of the 4 conditions :( or my english vocabulary is too low...

I just learned two weeks ago that English is the language among all the existing languages that contains the greatest number of words (nearly a million I think now, or something like that)

We need more math ones.

I thought this was kind of interesting:

What row of numbers comes next in this series?

1
11
21
1211
111221
312211
13112221

No - let's see if someone else can get it.

I know the answer to Hexxie's riddle but I don't want to spoil it for someone else.

Does it involve the Fibonacci series?

does it involve the Fibonacci series?

I had to look that up to see what it was. No, I don't believe it does.

I guess I asked for it wanting more math ones. But I'm terrible at sequences.

Space occurred to me, except that doesn't fit the present & past tense thing, even if it's also a verb.

A hint for the sequence. Read it aloud ;)

And there is no Fibonacci in this.

Smoke? Hint!

Nothing I was trying, mathematically, was working. Then last night my daughter was counting out her dolls in a way that had not occurred to me.

Is the next number:

1113213211?
