I just made my wife and I( the boys won't have anything to do with it) some S.O.S. I used the only recipe I know, the one my father taught me when I was six. It has ground beef, potatoes, onions, flour, and spices. I was wondering what other ingredients other people use. And I would like to hear the "original" mix, from the military.
Thanks.

ROFL... jm... Google SOS military food and you will find multiple recipes. It sounds lovely and something I grew up on, served over mashed potatoes when my dad was on the nightshift. You just didn't do it in the right order. Which is mashed potatoes and set aside, the flour is for thickening. My mom used ground beef, onions, some flavouring like boullion cubes, a bit of water and thickened it with a paste made of flour and water, or flour and butter when we could get butter.
Good luck, love you

Bobs your uncle, you are precious, reddy. Yes, parsnips, dumplings, yes, come for dinner you and I will make a dinner out of absolutely nothing and enjoy every bit.\\
The kids though don't appreciate that kind of cooking, maybe jm you and I. My son however, yes, likes it. But he grew up on that stuff at the farm, maybe made with not so palatizing beef or pork, but that's what was available while my hubby was starting his business.

I thought SOS was creamed chipped beef on toast. I'd use Buddig beef slices, make a white sauce, cut the beef into strips and add it to the white sauce, let it simmer for a few minutes, then spoon it on to toast points (toast cut into triangles).
My mom is from a wilderness farm in Idaho and has given me several easy recipes that are stomach fillers. One is medium-grain rice cooked slowly in milk (add more milk as needed) until the rice is soft and the mixture is creamy. Spoon onto a plate or into a cereal bowl, lay a slice or two of Velveeta on top to melt a bit and/or sprinkle with cinnamon. Yum! She has another one for a ham bone with meat on it and white beans, cooked in a pressure cooker or simmered together slowly in a covered pot on the stovetop.

We call it dish, and use cream of mushroom soup instead of flour. Your name is funnier.
