Why are you wanting to remove them?

This isn't something you can do yourself, it's done by a vet.

There is really no reason to remove the dew claw unless there's a problem.

To remove dewclaws, you should see your vet. The puppies should have their dews removed between 1-3 days of age. Anything after I believe a week, is going to cause serious pain the pups and most vets won't touch them until they are older.

Yes, you really have left it too late to do them. Docking and dew claws are done within the first few days of life.

I take it they are yorkies? Really no need to remove them anyway. When you rehome them just make sure the owners are aware they have dew claws that will need regular trimming.

I'm a bit amazed.

In Canada we don't remove dew claws, not unless there's a problem.

Going to ask a silly question. Why remove the dew claws? What purpose does it serve?

It prevents injury to the dog if they are out and about.

Not too sure why small dogs would get dews removed.. but my Pointers get their dews removed due to them running around in the field. The dogs that don't get the dews cut as infants have problems where the toe and/or nail breaks, is torn, gets wrapped up into things..

Don't know why a terrier would have them removed. Most dogs do use their dews for digging and such.. which is what terriers do best!

In China a Shih Tzu with all 4 dew claws is considered lucky ;) Fun fact.

With longer coated breeds it can be a pain when brushing them trying to brush around the nail, and it is easy to forget they are there when it's time to trim them... but other than that with the smaller ones it's not needed.

Large and Giant breed dogs are another story.

Thanks for the info Shaz and Lucky. My two bigger dogs both have their dew claws. It's never been an issue. I guess maybe because I've never had a dog that had them removed.

Chewy also has his dew claws, no problems, although Lucky's comment that they use their dews for digging had me thinking. ;)

Sorry for hijacking the thread, even though I don't think the OP is coming back. :(

Any dog of ours that actually had intact dew claws, were removed when they were spayed or neutered and under.

With big or little dogs, depending on the activity level, they can cause some pretty painful injuries.

But like every one else has mentioned, your VET removes them.

I must like in backwoods central. None of my vets have ever mentioned removing the dew claws.

Got to ask next time I go. Just for the info. :)
