Generally, AC Cable (AKA BX) is permitted to installed in wood studs.

What you do need to check is the local inspoector, and be ready with the building type or classification regarding fire codes.

AC cable may not be allowed in that type of building, and MC may be needed.

Special note, some areas, such as Chicago, only allows conduit, no matter what type of building.

You say it will be a "shop". Well then, what type of "shop".

What type of construction, what type of fire rating.

Local city and or state inspectors need to be consulted with.
