I am trying to find out if my late grandfather was adopted when his mother married someone when he was about 4 years old as he took the name of the man his mother married.

Then he was probably adopted.

Adoption records from that time are CLOSED. Getting them opened--or even finding out if there WAS a record--is next to impossible.

Pretty fair to say that he was adopted, though.
