I had a physical about a month ago by a new doctor. The nurse came in first and said to take everything off and to but the gown on and left. When the doctor came in he asked me a few standard questions in the beginning. Right before he started the exam he asked me to remove the gown. I was a bit in shock as I was naked underneath. He had me do the physical in the buff from beginning to end. I had never had this done before usually they will have you leave the gown on until the end or if they want you to remove the gown they will usually have the nurse tell you to leave your underwear on. Initially I was embarrassed but my doctor is a male so we both have the same equipment maybe different size.

Just curious has anyone else here had to do a physical in the buff from beginning to end? What was your reaction? He was professonal the whole time I just didn't see that as common practice.

Hi Cedars27,
This does strike me as a good deal unusual, if not a bit unprofessional. I've never heard of it, and I certainly wouldn't expect to encounter it in any medical capacity.
I'm a certified massage therapist myself, and I can understand that, professional capacity and ethics aside, after you've worked with enough people, in a sense, skin is skin, a body is a body. He may now be overly comfortable to the point where he feels he can hardly be bothered with proper procedure, but I couldn't imagine myself leaving a client on the table undraped, no matter how comfortable they were with such. You try to never uncover more at any given time than is immediately pertinent to your work or examination. And there is always the additional issue of room temperature as well, something I frequently need to inquire about, and another thing that should have been of considerable concern to him. Client or patient comfort is always first and foremost. That's not his time, it's yours. You are compensating him well for his proper attention, as well as his knowledge.
I don't really don't think he had any untoward intentions as you said, but his blasé attitude is something I would subtly confront him on should you ever find yourself in a similar situation as a continued patient of his. This should never become standard medical procedure, I feel. And if he were to do such with a female client, he could certainly perhaps open the door to possible legal or ethical recourse, no matter how well-mannered or not.
Take care.

If you honestly felt uncomfortable, then say something.

Unusual, yes, but I have heard of some who do it like that.

Either talk to him about this and don't do it like that the next time or find another Doctor…those seem to be your options.

Well put I agree fully if you feel uncomfortable then you need to say something straight away! After all you are within your rights to be treated the way that you wish to be.

I too have had a physical done on my when I was completely nude but the doctor asked me first. Normally, under the gown, I perefer to wear something out of the ordinary: a jockstrap. I am completely secure in one and almost everything that needs to be seen is out in the open. I can pull it aside when the time has arrived for the "turn your head and cough" session. Having ample equipment down there, I am used to having questions asked, but wearing this garment keeps it where it should be. If you were uncomfortable in that situation, you should have spoken up. More and more people these days are very self conscious about themselves and prefer to be covered up. Just look around in the gym locker room where guys wrap a towel around themselves and then change underneath rather than be exposed.
