My median credit score is 588 (horrible). I'm 51 years old and after my divorce, I lost my house and got one really bad remaining credit card debt (over $25,000) that I was unable to pay. I was able to pay off my mortgage with the home sale, but I discontinued all credit cards after that and paid the ones I could afford to pay off.

Then I got in an accident and accumulated many medical bills. I read your article and can't figure out how to improve my score. Recently, I was granted disability (due to the accident) and would like to invest in a small home for survival, but I can't get a loan. Should I apply for a credit card and start using it to improve my credit or should I just try paying down the debts I have? I have $15,000 cash right now from SSI back pay and would like to use it wisely. If I use all of that to pay off my debt I won't have anything left to make as a down payment. I found a cute home for only $41,000. What do I do?

Should I beg and beg for a co-signer? Is there any way I can get my credit raised up to 620 before it's too late? One of the requirements is that I must use this back pay money up within 6 months... it's been 2 months already.
