Abrahamic

Salaam,
In the Qur'an, it states that Muslims are allowed to marry Ahl Al-Kitab (any other believer of an Abrahamic religion e.g.. Islam, Christianity and Judaism.)
However, I know that if I were to marry a Christian, my parents would never accept it and they would say it was haraam of me.
Could you please clarify to me what is meant by Ahl Al-Kitab? And who is it halaal and haraam for me to marry?
Thanks in advance.
